Lovin’ My Latte (And Not Missin’ the Sugar)

What’s green, has 14 grams of protein, 60% of your daily allowance of  calcium, 20% of your daily allowance of Vitamins A, C and iron, and 72 grams of sugar?

A Starbuck’s green tea latte that I have vowed never to drink again, that’s what.

I’m kind of sad about it actually. Why didn’t I know this? Not that I indulged on a regular basis, mind you, but in my head I was making a healthier choice. Ha! (Looks like we’re about to reestablish our relationship soy lattes.)

Fortunately, Starbucks visits are rare. I typically frequent their fine establishment while on vacation (aka airports or travel plazas). I also receive personal delivery from Starbucks when my children are home from college. I can always count of them to do a Starbuck’s run for my coworkers and me.

In all honesty, I’d much rather patronize a local mom and pop establishment…but that’s not where I’m going here, so just hold tight.

Most days, coffee and tea are made at home. I have lots of coffee and tea recipes. (You should definitely check out my recipe page.) But green tea lattes were definitely a Starbuck’s thing. Until now that is.

Because look what I made!

Don’t let the color scare you. After all, if you ordered from Starbucks, the tea would be in a white cup and you wouldn’t even be able to see the color.

I really can’t believe how simple this was. I simply made tea (I made matcha, but I’d be willing to guess any tea bag would do the trick.)

Then simply add milk of choice and sweetener. For this cup I used soy milk and agave. I’m thinking next time I’m going to whip up some hemp milk! The possibilities are endless!

What’s green, has a bunch of vital nutrients and only 17 grams of sugar?

Yeah…I knew you’d get it right!

Green Tea Latte

1 c. tea (prepared)

1 c. milk of choice

1 T. sweetener of choice

Add warmed milk to hot tea. Add sweetener. Stir. Put in the microwave to create froth. Drink. Smile. You just saved yourself some money and a serious case of sugar overload. You’re welcome.

  1. My sweetener of choice is Stevia. For coffee and tea I use one or two drops of liquid stevia… zero grams of sugar :). I really love green tea. After reading your post I’m thinking: I wonder how coconut milk would taste wit this? Must try!
